Famous amateur golfer Bobby Jones once commented that golf is the closest game to living life, “You get bad breaks from good shots, you get good breaks from bad shots, but you have to play the ball where it lies.” Using the game of golf, The First Tee of Pikes Peak teaches core values and life skills to help kids from all backgrounds and ages tackle the good and bad breaks they get in life.
In April 2013, The First Tee of Pikes Peak officially became a part of the Colorado Springs Community with the mission to help Colorado Springs youth discover their best swings and best selves. The First Tee of Pikes Peak is a regional chapter of the international, non-profit The First Tee organization, and is dedicated to helping youth through fun educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices.
The First Tee is more than a junior golf program; every part of the program - the activities, curriculum and staff - is dedicated to helping participants develop confidence, overcome challenges and achieve goals.
This year’s programs will reach over 600 participants, ages 5-18, through seasonal programs at Valley Hi Golf Course and the Chapter’s indoor Learning Center – also open to the public - in the Citadel Shopping Center. “Our newly constructed short-game area at Valley Hi is one of the state’s premier practice facilities. Our presence at Valley Hi and our state-of-the-art 15,000 square foot indoor facility – which includes simulators, hitting bays, and a 3,000 square foot putting green - enable participants to work on golf skills and life skill lessons year round. This develops passionate golfers and more importantly amazing individuals,” comments Leighton Smith, Program Director and Class A PGA Professional. “And in 2016, we will open a Par 3 short course at Valley Hi, which will give our participants easy access to course experience.”
Program Coordinator Sam Vosler, also a Class A PGA Professional, highlights the importance of volunteers in making the programs successful. “Our volunteers are committed to working with participants through their unique personal and game development to become future leaders in the community.”
Whether on the course or in life, The First Tee equips young people to step up, commit, and follow through.
